Meet Karie Herringa
Short story: Karie is an award-winning journalist, digital content creator, social media strategist and leader actively looking for new opportunities in communications, marketing and public relations. She has spent nearly a decade leading newsrooms in digital strategy and multi-platform content creation by developing, implementing and enforcing strategic social media and digital initiatives to increase daily site users, video views, engagement and brand awareness.
For the past three years Karie has served as the digital executive producer at WXMI in Grand Rapids, overseeing and optimizing content across all of the station’s digital properties, apps and social media accounts. Karie is also the campaign leader for WXMI’s annual “If You Give a Child A Book…” fundraising campaign aimed at increasing childhood literacy rates by providing free books for students at Title I schools. Under her leadership, the campaign has raised more than $80,000 in the past two years and provided more than a dozen free books to every student single student at three Title I elementary schools in Grand Rapids. Karie was also a member of the 2023 John Ball Zoo RendeZoo planning committee, helping to plan the zoo’s biggest fundraising event of the year.
Karie’s work has been recognized by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters, the Michigan Associated Press and the Central Michigan University Alumni Association. In 2020, she was the inaugural recipient of the Michigan Association of Broadcasters Television Young Professional of the Year award. In 2022, she was named one of Central Michigan University's 10 Within 10 recipients by Central Michigan University's Alumni Association.
Long story: Karie graduated magna cum laude from Central Michigan University in the spring of 2014. While at CMU, Karie joined Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity and served as the PR/Rush Chair. She worked for CMU’s Career Services as a mock interviewer, as well as a student tutor. She was also a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success, and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. She worked as a cosmetologist part-time, and interned for former Senator Roger Kahn in the Michigan Senate.
After receiving her degree, Karie accepted a job as the communications coordinator for the Maryland Center for Construction Education and Innovation, a nonprofit based in Baltimore, Maryland, focusing on expanding skilled trades education and opportunities.
Karie joined the 9&10 News team in Dec. 2014 as a web producer. From there, she worked her way up to executive web producer before being named director of digital operations. Karie also made a weekly appearance on the WWTV's news & lifestyle show, the four, bringing northern Michigan the latest tech news every Tuesday. While at 9&10, Karie was involved in launching the hyper-local GTPulse column, creating the 2018 and 2020 election information center on the station’s website, and covering some of 9&10’s biggest events from the field on all of the company’s digital platforms.
In April of 2021, Karie accepted the role of digital executive producer at WXMI in Grand Rapids. Karie serves as a newsroom manager in charge of developing and executing WXMI's digital news, OTT and social media strategy. In her role as digital executive producer, she is responsible for overseeing and optimizing daily news coverage across all digital properties and social media sites.
